I was under the impression that you had to enable port forward, connect to a port forwarding enabled server, and then enter in the port used into your torrenting client, to torrent. I had been doing that by default because I heard somewhere that you have to, or else torrenting won't work. However, recently I forgot about that, and downloaded a torrent while still connected to my usual non-port forward enabled server and the torrent still worked. What are the advantages or disadvantages of port forwarding when downloading torrents?

  • You do not have to use port forwarding. It can make things faster, but it is also something that can in very rare situations help to identify you. (Note that this is almost never going to be a problem unless you torrent a whole lot or from questionable sites.)
  • Having an open port is more to help with uploading (incoming connections) than leeching. Either way I manage to max my line at 160Mbps down and 12Mbps up without forwarding any ports, so I should imagine you'd be fine either way.

    I'm curious. With my VPN normally I can get 2-5MB/s down. With port forwarding it drops to 1-2MB/s.
    Going with the VPN client off and just using SOCKS 5 proxy I can pull down at 20MB/s.
    Are these common speeds? I have 1GB fiber, so I feel the bottleneck is PIA. These stats were all from grabbing a popular seeded torrent (1,000+ seeds) off a private tracker.
  • I believe he is saying megabits per second. Since every server used by PIA is connected via a gigabit network, it would simply not be possible to manage 160 megabytes per second, even if he were the only user connected to the server.
    (160 * 8 = 1280 megabits per second if he meant megabytes.)

    Gigabit fibre? You lucky person. There are some gigabit deployments in my city too, and they're talking about making it almost city wide by next year. I live in hope!
    Those speeds are awful for your line, no two ways about it. Have you ruled out your setup? Don't be too quick to judge based on being able to saturate your line without the VPN, as my ISP's modem/router box is fine naked but chokes passing openvpn packets causing speed issues.
    Some basic questions to try to help sort this out:
    Who is your ISP (Google, Hyperoptic etc)?
    What is your local network setup (modem, router, ethernet or wifi)?
    What specs does your machine have and what OS (eg Arch Linux 4.0 kernel)?
    What network card are you using?
    Does your local machine have a firewall and/or antivirus software?
    What torrent program?
    How are you connecting to PIA, and over what protocol and port?
    We should hopefully be able to narrow this down for you to troubleshoot. I do max my line around 18MB/sec (144Mbps) but have seen a 3MB/sec cap due to the bad ISP router before using my own.
    BTW @OmniNegro if the VPN uses link aggregation, clustering or 10gige it's possible but as you say PIA aren't one of those VPN providers.

    My setup is:
    • ISP: CenturyLink 1 GB (1,000mbps) fiber
    • Local Network: Technicolor c2000t in transparent bridge mode to Asus RT-AC68u router running latest Merlin. I use two laptops, one running a media server on wifi and one just for torrents that is connected by 5e Ethernet cable to the router.
    • Running OSX 10.10.3 (Yosemite) on an older MacBook Pro (mid-2008). Also tried ethernet connected to brand new MacBook Pro (2014) and didn't see speed change.
    • No idea about network card.
    • No firewall
    • Deluge, though I have used uTorrent and Transmission for comparison. No difference. Followed some preference suggestions to up/down speed and connections. No change. So I basically set everything to unlimited.
    • Connect to PIA via taskbar client, usually linking to Seattle. For port forwarding, I tested using Netherlands. For SOCKS 5 test I also used Netherlands.

    If anyone can figure this out, that would be great!

    One thing I will add is I don't have my router set to OPENVPN, because I think that will put all my wifi connected laptops on the same VPN. The VPN messes up my Plex media server running on the newer MacBook Pro, so I only want my torrent laptop to be on the VPN.

    That said, I'm still super-frustrated with by 1GB fiber in general. It seems to be faster than anything I can use it for. My cloud backup maxes out at 5mbps and it seems like a 100MB connection would do stream Netflix just as fast as 1GB does. Still need to find a use for it.

  • My 20 megabits per second download speed is more than enough to handle Netflix even on what they call HD streams. Using my router to measure speed over time, the highest it gets to is about 360 kilobytes per second average, although it will start a stream at around 1.2 megabytes per second until buffered pretty well.
  • Well that is a headscratcher. Are you getting the same speed limits from the VPN on FTP, HTTP and other downloads, or is it just torrents? Weird your speed drops when you port forward, it shouldn't affect anything. You're not setting the forward using the router are you? Do you have UPnP and NAT-PMP disabled? (You should.)
    Thinking aloud here as it's a strange one, and hopefully we can stumble on something that helps:
    The 2008 MBP would be a Core2Duo I think? Potentially that could limit you somewhat due to the encryption required by openvpn, but I'd definitely expect more than 2MB/sec even then. Yosemite is a heavy ass OS (I have a 2013MBP) which won't help. Since you have tried a brand new MBP via ethernet and still had issues it seems we need to look elsewhere.
    The fact you get way better speed with SOCKS5 alone (to NL server) does support the possibility openvpn is either too heavy, or your local Seattle servers have rubbish bandwidth available. It could also possibly be protocol shaping (openvpn being throttled) but any ISP throttling openvpn would highly likely also shape non-encrypted torrent traffic using SOCKS5.
    Some suggestions off the top of my head to help rule out various things:
    1) Turn off the C2000T and Asus. Unplug the Asus and plug in the MBP direct to the C2000T via ethernet and allow it to connect directly. Then try some high speed downloads (Steam, ISOs from good Sourceforge mirrors, Ubuntu torrent). If the speed is way better we can suspect the Asus as being the bottleneck, if not it's more likely the VPN gateway or local machine.
    2) Set up qBittorrent with 1250 maximum peers, 250 peers per torrent (you can try 500 too) and unlimited upload and download speeds. Try with uTP bandwidth control on and off. Then download an Ubuntu torrent (they're very well seeded) on the VPN.
    3) Burn a light Linux live USB (you'll need a 2GB+ USB and this tool). I recommend Ubuntu 15.04 as it's easy to install stuff on and Unity is surprisingly light in this release. It's also fairly Mac-like. You can boot from the USB to play around in Linux without installing it on your MBP, just hold the option key while booting and it'll give you a choice to boot from USB. Install qBittorrent in the live environment, set it up quickly as above and fire up an Ubuntu torrent to test the speeds again. If it's way higher, suspect the Mac environment, if not we're still stuck.
    4) Try a different VPN provider. People bitch that the PIA US servers are slow all the time. AirVPN do a trial for around $1.50 (or thereabouts) and they're a great provider. You can use their client Eddie to rule out issues with PIA, as well as connect over SSL and SSH to rule out ISP throttling.
    5) Using PIA's client, try changing some parameters are see what difference it makes to speed on high speed download sources (again, fast FTP servers, Ubuntu torrent, etc). You could try port 8080 UDP, and even try connecting over TCP - though this is usually slower than UDP it can help troubleshoot. Then try changing the encryption. AES-128 or Blowfish will be faster than the default AES-256, and SHA1 is faster than SHA-256 etc.
    Do play around and get back to us. It's a lot to test and rule out (even more than I've written) but there's no reason you shouldn't be seeing at least 20MB/sec (150Mbps+) on your line via VPN consistently with the right local setup and a good provider.
