What is Phonics? Phonics is defined as a way of teaching reading and spelling that stresses symbol-sound relationships, used especially in beginning instruction. I use phonics practice with my students from 2 years old all the way to adults. I learned how to read in the U.S.A with phonics, so I really believe it can give a solid foundation for beginning readers. For example, A sounds like 'aaa' in the word apple, which starts with the 'aaa' sound. A-aaa-apple! Without the use of phonics, children would have to memorize every word they come across in order to read.
Think of phonics as the building blocks of reading. According to Wiley Blevins in his excellent book Phonics from A to Z: A Practical Guide(Published by Scholastic), 'Studies show that half of all English words can be spelled with phonics rules that relate one letter to one sound.' That's amazing! Think of the world of reading opportunities you are opening for your students by teaching them phonics!
